Hi Andrew

Thanks for the reply/info, I've always enjoyed your contributions to the C&G (episode titles, Commonwealth Games script, ratings and the 1971 version of Kitten Kong), some great reading!

Thanks for your kind words.  I've been continuing my researches into "The Goodies" of late, but unfortunately the information I've come across is just a scattering of facts which I can't form an article out of.  Nevertheless, when anything of use appears, I shall send it straight down to Brett to see if he can use it in C&G.  He does a brilliant job with the mag!

I have Androids Of Tara on tape somewhere here so I'll have to chisel the topsoil off it and check it out for myself.  I'm surprised I never noticed it considering how religiously I used to watch both shows (and in Australia they were repeated many times as I'm sure you'd know).

By a strange coincidence, I'm picking up a copy of the serial on DVD later today.  One of my favourites - a lovely "Prisoner of Zenda" spoof with a superb performance from Peter Jeffrey as the suave bad guy.

I'm looking forward to "Bang-Bang-A-Boom" immensely - and was *delighted* when I heard a few weeks back that Graeme was going to be appearing in it.

I'm quite disappointed to read that the author of Complete Goodies put stuff in there as a "joke".  What a plonker he is.  I should return the book to the publishing house and say I only bought it for a joke!

He means well and he really *does* love "The Goodies".  I suspect it's just a case of his "Doctor Who" knowledge not being as strong as his comedy folklore.

The business with Mrs Whitehouse amuses me because the first season of The Goodies was by far the most raunchiest (by early 1970's standards of course), and yet she was originally so positive about the show in terms of family entertainment.  She must've been out the night Playgirl Club originally aired? .  The episode with Mrs Desiree Carthorse was one of the all time classics!

I suspect that there was no issue because the show originally went out in a late night slot as opposed to the later mid-evening slot ... although I've a feeling that "Playgirl Club" was given a BBC1 early evening repeat in the summer of 1971. So, yes, she must have been out!

All the best

Andrew

Interesting bit of trivia was that TBT's Goodie throne was the one used in the Who story "The Androids Of Tara" (which was one of the 1978 Key To Time stories).

I've a feeling that, when I had to check this out for an article on "The Androids of Tara" a few years ago, I found that this wasn't the case; comparing photos, it seemed that the two props were similar ... but not the same.  But then again I could well have been wrong ...

The book also claims, as part of the Doctor Who entry, that Peter Davidson (as opposed to Davison) had a bit part in the Pollution episode, this is also listed at imdb.com but I don't think that's correct, does anyone know the full story here?    He would've been 20 years old at the time of Pollution.

The two are completely different actors: Peter Davison and Peter Davidson.  When I raised this with Robert after I'd pulled him up over it in a review, he explained that he'd put this in as a joke ...

Another connection is that both series filmed at Athelhampton House in 1975.

In addition to the 13 episodes of "Professor Prune and the Electric Time Trousers", there's an earlier ISIRTA which has a rather lacklustre spoof called "Dr Why and the Thing".  It's not a very good parody ... largely because the original script reveals it was a send up featuring Professor Quatermess (a spoof on the "Quatermass" SF serials of the 1950s), with the lead character's name ameded by hand to "Dr Why" shortly before recording ...

There was a fair bit of cross-over between cast and crew across the two shows ... and both made considerable demands of the BBC Visual Effects Department, as well as upsetting Mrs Whitehouse on numerous occasions!

Ok, I just checked that Complete Goodies book and it lists an "anti-K9 rant in Robot" as one of the Doctor Who references.

Wasn't that Invasion Of The Moon Creatures?  From what I can recall the Dr Who "references" in the Goodies have been:

1.Patrick Troughton guest starring in "The Baddies"

2. Jon Pertwee guest starring in "Wacky Wales"

3. The TARDIS appearing in Invasion Of The Moon Creatures

4. Graeme's version of R2D2 impersonating a Dalek in U Friend Or UFO

5. I think there was also a reference to K9 in the final season of the show but I just can't remember for sure.

Any others?

Also don't forget the U Friend or UFO episode with the remarkably familiar police box making an appearance.

BTW is the ISIRTA episode called Professor Prune & The Electric Time Trousers on any of the released ISIRTA tapes?

No, none of the 1969 series episodes (which featured Professor Prune as the running serial -- for which, see <http://www.rfwilmut.clara.net/research/ISIRTA/6th_series.html>) have been released. If you look around on the various file and music sharing services (e.g. Audiogalaxy, Gnutella, OpenNap) you'll probably be able to find recordings of those episodes, although they are mostly of abysmal quality (the recordings, not the episodes!).

Yeah! Well cool!! You know what? I reckon when Who turns 40 next year there should be a screening somewhere in Britain of The Baddies (with Patrick Troughton), Wacky Wales (with Jon Pertwee) and Invasion Of The Moon Creatures (a Who parody). BTW is the ISIRTA episode called Professor Prune & The Electric Time Trousers on any of the released ISIRTA tapes?

Big Finish, who produce 'Doctor Who' audio dramas, have just announced that Graeme Garden will be a guest star in their December play. See <http://www.doctorwho.co.uk>!
