The copyright law is ridiculous. As far as I know, there's nothing to say that copying something from one format to another is illegal here in the UK, but I can't be too sure on that. What bamboozles me with copyright and the disclaimers you get at the start of videos and DVDs is that you're not allowed to let people borrow them. Is that actually enforced??? Insane.
I'm glad that everyone's on the same wave length!
I've uploaded a few new videos to YouTube lately but not a huge amount. So far I've not had any more trouble about it. I'm struggling to think of any more clips to upload, so if anyone has any Goodies requests, not commercially available, feel free to make a suggestion!

Well pretty much everything is illegal, the same way everything gives you cancer. I don't think any laws will be changed regarding copyrighting. I mean it's not like anyone pays attention to them now anyway.
Still, it's a bit stupid, isn't it? They give us all of this remarkable technology - VCRs, media converters and what-not - but God forbid we be allowed to use any of it! ---------- "I cannot talk to a man who bears an undeserved animosity towards ferrets." -- Graham Chapman |

(((((Big Hug for Ratty))))))
Try not to let it get to you - basically every damn thing is illegal, but 'they' simply can't enforce the sillier laws like ripping CDs to your iPod - in our innocent til proven guilty system, they'd have to PROVE you didn't buy it online. And short of bursting into your home and catching you at it (ripping, that is), they'd prove that HOW exactly??
Then there's CDs with the security thingo that alledgedly stops them being rippable. How we laugh as we trot out our whiteboard markers... |

I don't see any moral issue with downloading or copying something which is unavailable to me any other way. If there's no chance of them selling it to me, they're not losing out if I download it.

All my music on my mp3 player comes from cd's I bought with my own money anyway, and its for my use only. If they have a problem with that then they can go and get f-word ( sorry for the bad language).
I'm just sick and tired over the last few months of people telling me what can and cant do. Also when they try and force me into doing something. I'm still getting over being run over by a car nearly a year ago. I'm still going through the motions a bit. I have hit after over the last few months.
Sorry to go into all that but i'm still going to put my music on the computer from cds I bought in the first place to convert onto my mp3 player. I paid for the music so in my mind im not doing anything illegal. |

If it were of any importance to the television stations, they'd make it so you couldn't record off the television by having boxes that connected to your TV that meant you couldn't do so (and the TV wouldn't work unless you had it connected to one of these boxes). Foxtel does it already with their Box Office channels, but don't do so to their other channels. If it were such a problem for them, they would do so. I think it should be legal to do whatever the hell you want with the stuff, just as long as you don't sell it on. Anyway... when you buy a CD, it becomes your property - you should be able to do whatever the hell you please with it. I hate having to pay for the rights to use music in films and shows I make, especially when the publishers take their sweet @rse time (as long as 18 months, just to use the ruddy thing!). They're about as good as the builders who re-did the Goodies' office... if it didn't take as long, I wouldn't mind paying for songs.
Just a question for those in the UK... does anybody know if copyright is automatically given to something when it is created (as it is in Australia)? |

Too right, Knerd - as I understand it, technically you can't rip CDs to iPod - you're supposed to buy the song online through Destra or the like, even if you have the song already on CD. Or vinyl. Or tape. Or cartridge. Or minidisk. You're not 'allowed' to change the music from one format to another, or make backup copies (like no-one's ever made a new copy of a tape as the original started to get thin). Coz the $30 you paid for the CD was only for the music in that format.
So, if it's illegal, how come they let you buy machines that copy tapes, record off telly and the like? It's like the many home brew shops that sell stills "for the manufacturing of essential oils". And not spirits. Oh no. |
