2. BOFFO IDEAS
**************

You can make it happen here. Liven up the club with a boffo idea for bob-a-job week. E-mail <enquiries@goodiesruleok.com> with your comments, ideas or suggestions - meanwhile these are the boffo ideas which our club has been working on this month:

UPDATED GOODIES EPISODE SUMMARIES

Two more Goodies Episode Summaries have been revised on the GROK website since last month's newsletter was published – "Snooze" and "Give Police A Chance".

WEBSITE POLLS

Last month's poll provided a comfortable win for the Queen ("Long to reign over YOU!") as the choice of Tim's drag roles, with Timita and Lady Macbeth also polling quite well. Perhaps the Timita Party might look at forming a coalition government with Lady Macbeth to overthrow the monarchy – it would have more chance of success than her coalition with Che of the Leftist Loony Party at any rate!

Tim dressed up as a woman in many Goodies episodes. Which is your favourite of his female roles?
- Lady Macbeth (The Movies)                14 votes
- Timbellina Tottywallop (Chubby Chumps)   11 votes
- Mitzi (The Playgirl Club)                 5 votes
- Tour Hostess (Daylight Robbery)           6 votes
- Penelope Fay dancer (Come Dancing)        4 votes
- The [substitute] Queen (Royal Command)   24 votes
- Timita (Politics)                        16 votes
- Fairy Godmother (Snow White 2)            6 votes
- other                                     2 votes
- Rolf's Granny (Bristo Gravy Mix mock ad) 11 votes
Total:                                     99 votes

This time around you can make a choice on which of the Goodies' live performances in the epic special "Goodies Rule – OK?" turn you on. So take a not-so-leisurely spacehopper bounce to your nearest website polling booth and cast your vote today. You know it makes sense!

Which is your favourite Goodies song performance from the episode "Goodies Rule - OK?"
- The Bootles' "She Loves You"
- The Confirmed Batchelors "Silence"
- The Extremes "Baby Love"
- Wild Thing
- Bounce
- I'd prefer something with Rolf Harris

3. SPOTTED!!!
*************

More exciting than getting your wig-spotters badge! If you've seen the Goodies recently, e-mail <clarion@goodiesruleok.com> with the details. Here's where we've Spotted!!! the Goodies this month:

ONE IS FINALLY AMUSED ...!

Congratulations to Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden for getting OBEs for their contributions to light entertainment in the Queen's Birthday Honours List! (Bill Oddie received an OBE in 2003 for services to wildlife conservation.)

There are a number of articles reporting the news, but for the moment I'm going to cut & paste one from the Belfast Telegraph which includes quotes from the two honorees (the article is online at http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/entertainment/news/goodies-pair-thrilled-with-obes-16010736.html ):

Goodies pair 'thrilled' with OBEs

Saturday, 11 June 2011

Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden have made it a clean sweep of OBEs for The Goodies

Goodies stars Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor said they were thrilled to be given OBEs in the Queen's Birthday Honours List - after spending years poking fun at the honours system.
The pair would regularly joke about the Government's readiness to hand out OBEs in the 1960s as they starred in BBC radio series I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again. The gags continued in their hit 1970s TV show The Goodies

Graeme, 68, said: "It's quite ironic considering how rude we were about the honours all those years ago."

The awards - for their contribution to "light entertainment" - means that the entire Goodies trio has been given the honour. Colleague Bill Oddie – an eminent ornithologist - was given his OBE in 2003 for services to wildlife conservation.

Tim, 70, said of the award: "I'm very, very pleased and not to say a little surprised - but very pleasantly so. At first I thought it was my son trying to con me.

"We used to send up the honours, the OBE in particular. It was back in the 60s and Harold Wilson was giving them away like sweets to anyone he ever met.

"But I think the minute Bill got one, I changed my mind about them!"

Broadcasters honoured in the list include BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour presenter Jenni Murray, 61, who is made a dame, and BBC Radio 2 DJ "Whispering" Bob Harris, 65, who gets an OBE. Jenni, who admits to being "not very good" at keeping secrets, said it had been difficult to keep the news to herself.

In the acting world, an OBE is awarded to Doctor Who actor Bernard Cribbins, 82, who also narrated children's show The Wombles. Bernard said: "It's a great surprise. I'm completely gobsmacked really."

GOODIES VISUAL EFFECTS

Just a note to say I've been able to have a good look at the book "VFX" which is a history of the BBC visual effects department... it includes several pages about The Goodies, including behind-the-scenes photos of some well-known scenes.
Also highlights a lot of other BBC programmes of course, including Doctor Who, Blakes 7 and Hitch Hikers Guide.
(Daniel Bowen - 2nd Jun)

GOODIES? BADDIES, MORE LIKE IT!

I've noticed several publishers starting to sell books primarily consisting of Wikipedia articles. To be clear, I don't mean books which use Wikipedia as a resource, but rather someone just printing hardcopies of Wikipedia pages.

Watch out in particular for books from "Books LLC" which have bold black text on tan covers with no cover illustration. Some examples can be seen at these Amazon pages:

In addition to Goodies-specific titles I've seen, collections from that same publisher that mention one or more Goodies include (but are not limited to):

- English Humorists
- English Nature Writers
- Old Edwardians / Old Wykehamists
- People from Rochdale
- British Ornithologists
- English Radio Writers
- Scottish Comedians

A second publisher, Alphascript Publishing, appears to have entered the game. While I haven't had a chance to examine this book in person (as I did with one of the Books LLC titles), their "Bill Oddie Goes Wild" paperback (as seen at http://www.amazon.com/BILL-ODDIE-GOES-WILD/dp/613414410X/ ) includes a note on the cover (in the green circle) saying "High Quality content by Wikipedia articles!"
(Lisa Manekofsky – 9th Jun)

They must have been found out... now it's Betascript publishing with a red circle...
(Mark Longmuir – 10th Jun)

GOODIES HOMAGE

The other night I saw a show called Realism at the Soho Theatre, which had a character called Tim giving a speech with Land of Hope and Glory playing in the background. A bit later on a load of black and white minstrels turn up on stage with him, singing and dancing...
(Garry Johnstone – 12th Jun)

BILL SPOTTINGS

The Countryside on Television.
Kate Humble, Bill Oddie, Bill Bryson, John Craven and Clarissa Dickson Wright discuss television's changing relationship - and current obsession - with the countryside. What explains the huge appeal of shows like Countryfile and Lambing Live to an urban audience? Is television helping to bring town and country together, or is the gap getting larger?
The programme remembers the pioneers of Welly Telly, like Phil Drabble, Jack Hargreaves and Hannah Hauxwell, and features archive from The Good Life, All Creatures Great and Small and Last of the Summer Wine.

(9th Jun)

* I contacted Keith Wickham, the man who has provided many recovered/restored episodes of "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again" to BBC Radio 4 Extra (formerly BBC Radio 7). I asked about the station's playing the highly edited Transcription Services versions of many episodes (in particular from series 7, with the "Professor Prune" serial, which have been airing the past few months) while more complete versions are in circulation.
Keith asked that I let everyone know that he has restored all the shows (with a few being of varying quality, but mostly they are perfect). However, BBC Radio 4 Extra made the decision to only use his restorations in cases where they didn't have any copy of an episode; the result is that, for the most past, the station is using the Transcription Services versions. This decision likely was due to the station needing to clear for OFCOM regulations any newly obtained shows, which would take time and money.
There may be hope on the horizon, though. According to Keith, there is a chance that BBC Radio 4 Extra will broadcast the whole series in full if they feel the current broadcasts have been sufficiently popular. Therefore, please continue to tune in for the weekly broadcasts, and encourage your friends to do the same!
(Lisa Manekofsky - 9th Jun)

* I’m passing along the official newsletter from "I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue":

ISIHAC NEWSLETTER

Dear I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue Mailing List Member

Just a brief note to say:

1. Following the success of our sell out Official 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' not for broadcast Theatre Tours in previous years, we are planning a special one-off date in Salford this September, featuring Colin Sell, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Barry Cryer, Graeme Garden, Jeremy Hardy and Jack Dee. Tickets are now on sale:

The Lowry, Salford
Matinee starts 3.00pm (finishes at around 5.30pm)
Evening performance starts 7.30pm (finishes at around 10pm)
Tickets are currently on sale
Box office: 0843 208 6000

Book early to avoid disappointment!

2. The 55th series of 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' starts transmission from Monday 27th June, 6.30pm on Radio 4. The series will begin with the two excellent shows we recorded recently at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham with Marcus Brigstocke as guest.

3. Apologies to those people who thought they had tickets for our recording at the Grassington Festival on 30th June but were disappointed. We do tell every venue we visit that they need to ensure their online booking system is as robust as possible due to the volume of calls they're likely to receive as soon as the tickets go onsale, but still it keeps happening. Even the mighty See Tickets, a ticketing organisation that books the likes of Take That, Madonna and U2, had their online site brought to a halt by ISIHAC fans.

4. Clue regular Jeremy Hardy would like you all to know that he will be performing his acclaimed one man stand-up show in London this weekend:

Sunday 12th June
Regent's Park Open Air Theatre
Box office: 0844 826 4242

5. And finally, Tony Hawks, esteemed guest panellist of many editions of ISIHAC, would like you to know that there is now a feature film of his bestselling book - exclusively available on DVD from www.roundirelandwithafridge.com .

That's about the size of it.

Jon Naismith and Bethan Bide
I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue
(10th Jun)

* The mailout doesn't reveal the actual date of this special one-off date, but the Lowry website says it's Sunday September 4th. I am seriously considering cancelling work that weekend.....
(Isabell Olevall - 10th Jun)

5. GOODIES WORD PUZZLE
**********************
(by Brett Allender)

This puzzle consists of a series of Goodies clues to solve, with the highlighted letter from each horizontal answer forming a vertical solution. The letters of the solution then need to be unscrambled and the 3 words rearranged to form the end solution (5, 3 & 4 letters) from the episode "Politics" – Clue: Timita has their interests at heart.

The information to solve the clues can be found in my Goodies Episode Summaries in the Articles/Guides section of the website if there are episodes listed that you are unfamiliar with. One letter has also been provided for each clue to assist with the solving of the puzzle.

The solution will be published in the next edition of the C&G. Alternatively there is a copy of the puzzle (in Word format) and solution on the website at: http://www.goodiesruleok.com/articles.php?id=98&page=7
