You'll have had your tea? Dougal here. Well, here we go, with our wee book. It's a collection or pot pourri (I've no idea what Hamish means by that - it sounds like something to do with the Pope) of our activities or 'doings' in the village we call home, because that's exactly what it is. Together with our housekeeper, Mrs Naughtie, and of course, the Laird who lives up at the big hoose and shoots grouse and other bottles of whisky, these are the actual scripts of our wee show which we performed on the wireless, when most of you were probably in bed! Hamish and I have known each other all our lives - well, not yet, obviously! We have a very close relationship and also with each other. Mrs Naughtie been with us since we first met her at the Krankie Arms, where she was working as part-time barmaid and bouncer. In addition to the scripts you'll find all kinds of other things tucked away under its kilt. There's a hectic social life in the village. You'll visit the 'bide a wee' cafe, proud possessor of three Michelin tyres. You'll have a conducted tour of the big hoose by Big Tam, our local guide (not during opening hours).
You'll marvel at the site of the Battle of Auchtermuchty, now allotments. You'll peek into the Laird's social diary in 'oot and aboot' (40p at the post office). And a great deal more. Well, I hope this wee note will make you hurry to the till and spend the terrible amount of money these wee books cost these days. But then again this particular wee book is Scotland's answer to Richard and Judy! Hurrah! Away now."

Radio 4 to honour Humphrey Lyttelton with a tribute day on June 15th

At the end of Radio 4's April 30th tribute to Humphrey Lyttelton, it was announced that the ISIHAC teams will be paying their own tribute to Humph on Sunday, May 11th. The exact time is yet to be announced.

In addition, Radio 4 will honor Humph with a tribute day on Sunday, June 15th. The following news stories come from The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/apr/30/bbc.radio1?gusrc=rss&feed=media) and Chortle (http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2008/04/30/6713/humphrey_lyttelton_day)

FROM THE GUARDIAN:

Radio 4 to honour Lyttelton with tribute day

Ben Dowell
guardian.co.uk, Wednesday April 30 2008

Radio 4 is to broadcast a Humphrey Lyttelton day in June to pay tribute to the presenter, who died on Friday aged 86.

The Radio 4 controller, Mark Damazer, has given the nod to a tribute programme to be broadcast on Sunday June 15 to mark the achievements of the veteran presenter of comedy panel show I'm Sorry I haven't a Clue.

This will be backed by a repeat of his Desert Island Discs episode and a repeat of his programme about jazz, The King of the Swingers.

In addition, his friend and fan Stephen Fry will present a specially commissioned profile of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue with extracts of the best programmes.

A Radio 4 spokeswoman confirmed the plans but declined to comment on the future of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, of which Lyttelton was chairman since its inception in 1972.

According to a Radio 4 source, however, the show is likely to continue. The source added that replacement presenter may be sought for Lyttelton but that this is unlikely to be filled by one of the current panel, which includes Graeme Garden and Barry Cryer.

Lyttelton, who celebrated 60 years as a bandleader in January, was admitted to hospital on April 16. He underwent surgery on Monday morning to repair an aortic aneurysm, but died following complications.

After his admission to Barnet general hospital in north London, the spring series of his show was cancelled, prompting a wave of goodwill messages from Radio 4 listeners.

As well as his jazz playing Lyttelton also had stints as a cartoonist, a restaurant critic for Vogue and a regular columnist on Punch.

But he became a household name for his broadcasting, most notably his deadpan performances as the innuendo-prone chairman of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, where he genially presided over games such as Mornington Crescent.

FROM CHORTLE:

Humphrey Lyttelton Day
R4 to broadcast tribute shows

Radio 4 is to dedicate a day of programming to Humphrey Lyttelton.
Shows will include a new tribute documentary, as well as repeats of both his Desert Island Discs episode and his programme about jazz, The King of the Swingers.

In addition, Stephen Fry will present a newly commissioned profile of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, with extracts of the best programmes.

The tributes will go out on June 15.

Meanwhile, speculation is rising about whether the 'antidote to panel games'
will continue following Lyttelton's death on Friday at the age of 86.

Although Humph's lugubrious presence and dry wit defined the show he hosted since 1972, insiders suggest the show is likely to find a new host.

Panellist Graeme Garden told the BBC's in-house paper Ariel: 'On a personal note, I do want the show to go on and the fans do, too. It can never be the same, bit I'd like to think it still had legs.'

But he said it would be a mistake to 'try to find a copy of Humph'.

Barry Cryer added: 'A few years ago, he jokingly said that if he went under a bus, there should be no misplaced loyalty and the show should go on.'

Rob Brydon stood in for Lyttelton on the last live date of the I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue tour.
Graeme recalls his early career from working with the likes of John Cleese, to becoming part of the hugely successful antidote to panel games, plus The Goodies.
According to an article in today's <a href="http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article3822583.ece"" target="_blank">Times Online, a record setting kazoo band lead by Humphrey Lyttelton at the I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue date in London earlier this month might make it into the Guiness Book of World Records.

Humphrey Lyttelton delivers swansong with giant kazoo band
Maurice Chittenden

Humphrey Lyttelton, the jazz trumpeter who became doyen of the double entendre as chairman of the quiz show I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, is to make a bid from beyond the grave to enter the record books as leader of the world’s biggest kazoo band.

Lyttelton, who died on Friday aged 86 after heart surgery, equipped every member of the 3,550-strong audience with a kazoo at a live version of the radio programme earlier this month at the Hammersmith Apollo in London and encouraged them to hum into the simple instrument.

The feat has been logged with Guinness World Records, which is likely to confirm the breaking of the previous official record set by 2,679 people in Rochester, New York, in 2006.

It will be a typical last achievement by a man who defied all logic to succeed in almost every career he put his hand to.

When once asked by an interviewer what was the secret of his success, Lyttelton leant back and said, only half-jokingly: “I’m sorry, I haven’t a clue.”

His radio programme, in which Lyttelton would make outrageous remarks about the erotic exploits of Samantha, the quiz’s fictitious scorer, was described yesterday by Mark Damazer, controller of Radio 4, as the “most successful” comedy show ever heard on the station.

It has run for 36 years and the BBC must now decide whether to relaunch it with a new chairman. The panel of Barry Cryer, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden yesterday ruled themselves out of daring to sit in Lyttelton’s chair.

Frontrunners for the role will include Rob Brydon, who hosted a live show in Bournemouth last week after Lyttelton had gone into hospital for an operation to repair a blocked artery; Jeremy Hardy, who frequently guested on the show to sing the words of one song set to the tune of another; and Paul Merton, who appears on television’s Have I Got News for You and Radio 4’s Just a Minute, the Clue’s closest rival in both longevity – it started in 1967 – and success.

Cryer said yesterday: “They are big shoes to fill. Humph was the very hub of the show and it revolved around him. Leading the kazoo band was typical of him.

“Long-running shows become like soaps with clearly defined characters and I don’t think it would work if a panellist became chairman. It would need somebody of stature to be parachuted in.

“Humph was the coolest man I knew. He was a polymath and an amazing man. He was a great ad-libber. A few years ago he suddenly stopped from reading some nonsense in the middle of a show and looked at the audience and said: ‘I’m 78 for chris-sake’. He got a huge laugh for that.”

Lyttelton did the last gig with his jazz band the night before he went into hospital. He even recorded a special message to introduce last Tuesday’s quiz show in Bournemouth: “Humphrey Lyttelton here. I can’t do the show tonight. I am in hospital. I wish I had thought of this earlier.”

Lyttelton was born in May, 1921, the son of an Eton house-master. He claimed he was descended from another Humphrey Lyttelton who was executed for collaborating in the gunpowder plot with Guy Fawkes.

His musical career started when at the age of 15 he slipped away from an Eton-Harrow cricket match at Lord’s to buy a trumpet.

When, as an acting captain in the Grenadier Guards, he stormed ashore during the allied invasion of Italy in 1943, he held a pistol in one hand and a bag containing his trumpet in the other.

Returning from the war, he became a successful cartoonist at the Daily Mail and a writer of books about music.

He was such an accomplished player of traditional New Orleans jazz that when he wrote his first autobiography at the age of 33 he called it I Play as I Please.

Two years later in 1956 he became the first British jazz musician to have a Top 20 hit single when Bad Penny Blues reached number 19 in the charts. Louis Armstrong, who was a friend, said he was Britain’s best trumpeter: “That cat in England who swings his ass off”.

Chris Barber, who was topping the bill at a jazz festival in Germany with his big band yesterday, said: “Unlike some people who talk about jazz eloquently, he played it right and with a great sense of dignity. He will be very much missed but much honoured in memory.”

Lyttelton had almost completed a new album and a new book before he died.

Kenneth Clarke, the former chancellor and an avid jazz fan, said yesterday: “He was a delightful, congenial and civilised man. He did a lot for British jazz. He wasn’t just trad. He was very much more sophisticated than that. He could swing. I always enjoyed listening to his band.”

**Edited by Wackywales to add: The programme will be broadcast on Easter Monday, 24 March.**

Today's Times Online has an article about the Frost Report special that was recorded a few months ago (with Tim in the cast). This was originally supposed to be a Christmas special but this article says it'll be shown "at Easter".

Here's the article (from
http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_rad
io/article3376827.ece):

The Frost Report to return after 40 years

Adam Sherwin
The Frost Report, the satirical show that spawned comedy dynasties, will return for a special edition featuring surviving members of the original line-up.

John Cleese, Michael Palin, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Ronnie Corbett will join Sir David Frost for the The Frost Report Is Back, a BBC Four two-hour special, to be broadcast at Easter.

Launched in 1966, the successor to That Was The Week That Was, it lampooned Britain's still class-based society. Written by Antony Jay (later of Yes, Minister), the programme concentrated on a single topic each week, such as law or class.

The Frost Report united the Ronnies Corbett and Barker and gave Cleese his television debut. In the most famous sketch, the 6'5" Cleese illustrated the class divide by looking down upon the two Ronnies standing next to him.

It ran for two series, but The Frost Report graduates went on to form Monty Python's Flying Circus and The Goodies, and the programme influenced satirical comedy for decades.

Sir David said: "Putting The Frost Report Is Back together has been a joy, with so many memories - and even more important, so many laughs - along the way."

Musical satire on the show was provided by folk singer Julie Felix and Tom Lehrer. The sketches and monologues were written by such luminaries as Marty Feldman, Keith Waterhouse, Peter Tinniswood, Bill Oddie, Barry Cryer and Frank Muir.

Mail on Sunday article about Bill's garden

The following article appeared in the Mail on Sunday on February 10, 2008:

My Oddie plot is one for the birds ; In the garden: Plastic herons, gnomes and nick-nacks ... it's the garden of our most famous wildlife expert

by MARTYN COX

He is the UK's most famous wildlife expert, so you might imagine that Bill Oddie's garden would be a calm oasis, free of anything that might deter any shy birds from dropping in.

Well, you would be wrong - his tiny plot is full of brightly coloured nick-nacks.

Noisy wind chimes, beads, lanterns and mirror balls dangle from the branches of trees, while plastic herons, deer and owls keep watch over a gang of gnomes.

But rather than frighten creatures, it has the opposite effect and within just ten minutes of standing in his garden we've seen robins, blackbirds, wrens, great tits, pigeons and chaffinches.

'It proves you don't need a certain style, planted with all the right things, to attract wildlife,' says Bill, who can be seen on BBC2's Bill Oddie's Wild Side, which includes clips of wildlife recorded by him in his garden.

The 66-year-old moved into his home in Hampstead, North London, more than 20 years ago and shares his 30 ft by 20 ft garden with his scriptwriter wife Laura Beaumont, 54.

His collection of unusual objects started when the couple got hitched in 1983. 'Our wedding list consisted entirely of garden gnomes. And when we had a party here to celebrate, we had a never- ending stream of guests coming outside and putting them down over there,' says Bill, pointing to a part of the garden that he calls 'Gnomesville'.

Close to the gnomes is the 'Magical Tree', whose branches are used to display dangling trinkets, while at the back is the East Asian-inspired 'Vietnam' area, where stone Buddhas nestle among leafy shrubs.

Near the French doors that lead Our wedding list was garden gnomes from the house, several fake skulls sit on posts and a gnome with red paint dribbling from its mouth like blood has been placed under an acacia tree. 'It's my tribute to eccentric film director Tim Burton,' says Bill.

'I love playing in the garden. I'm not happy if I can't spend half an hour out here every day,' says the man who has fronted countless TV nature shows including Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Bill Oddie Goes Wild. So what makes his garden such a Mecca for birds? 'There's plenty of cover from plants, which makes them feel safe.

Probably the best you can grow is ivy, which climbs up my house and in the trees. As a habitat it's fantastic and last year a robin nested in it,' says Bill.

There are other ways you can make your garden more bird- friendly. Now is the best time to clean out existing nesting boxes or find a spot for a new one, as this is when birds start pairing up and settling down.

Bill makes sure his birds are well fed. His garden has a mealworm feeder - the larvae of the mealworm beetle are loved by many birds and can help fledglings survive the first few weeks of life. Don't forget to provide birds with water, too.

When you put out a bird bath, ground feeding station or hanging feeders, it is important to place them somewhere birds will feel safe - a spot that gives them clear visibility ' We have a feng shui fox of the garden, with some cover nearby should they become alarmed.

Viewers of Bill's new show will know it's not just birds that are attracted to his garden. 'We have a feng shui fox who likes to move everything around,' says Bill.

'His main fetish was the figure of Jesus that I've stood on a brick in a pond so it looks as though he is walking on water.

'Most mornings I would find that he had been taken out of the pond and once he'd been put on the lawn, next to a rubber crocodile.' Bill is even nonchalant about our most detested mammal - rats. 'I don't want them in the house, but outside they're not doing any harm,' he says.

And when we spot four grey baby rats and their parents looking for food at the back of the garden, Bill grabs his camcorder and films the action.

He tells me that on one occasion he did try to discourage the rats by putting out a stuffed cat near to where they forage.

'They didn't care and neither did a robin that landed on its head within seconds,' says Bill.

I get the impression he is actually quite glad they decided to stay.

The latest series of Bill Oddie's Wild Side is on BBC2 on Wednesdays at 8pm until March 12.

For more on wildlife gardening, check out the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' website, www.rspb.org.uk..
Daily Mail article about Rolf Harris mentions The Goodies

An article in today's <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/femail/article.html?in_article_id=5058
54&in_page_id=1879"" target="_blank">Daily Mail about Rolf Harris mentions The Goodies. Here is the relevant excerpt:

"He was becoming famous - and notorious. By 1975, the comedy troupe The Goodies attempted to catch "a wild Rolf Harris".

They put him in a zoo, but he escaped, mated and caused "a Rolf Harris plague" in Britain. The real Rolf's reaction to this is sanguine. "I would have loved to play myself," he sighs."

The Goodies get several mentions in a <a href="http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-life-features/liverpool-special-features/2008/01/01/this-is-your-strife-michael-aspel-64375-20301143/"" target="_blank">Liverpool Daily Post article about Michael Aspel.

Here are the relevant excerpts:

This is your strife, Michael Aspel
Jan 1 2008 by Peter Elson, Liverpool Daily Post

Is it the end for Aspel? With Liverpool his last stop hosting the Antiques Roadshow before retirement, where does broadcasting’s famous silver fox go now? Peter Elson asks the man himself

HE IS undoubtedly Britain’s suavest former drainpipe-layer, who started his working life as a publisher’s tea boy, quenching the thirst of our leading writers.

After this eclectic start, Michael Aspel’s career has run through the golden age of television, through news and light entertainment to the Antiques Roadshow.

His durable persona allowed him credibility as both a serious BBC newsreader and acting as Corporation straight-man when tormented by comics like The Goodies and Morecambe and Wise.
. . .

But he made a far bigger impression being squashed by a giant kitten’s paw on The Goodies stuck in many viewers’ memories.

“When we were doing the Antiques Roadshow in Australia did constant radio interviews for two days after filming finished,” says Michael.

“All they wanted to hear about was The Goodies. It was like going to Japan and having to discuss some esoteric thing.

“I get regular cheques from the BBC for 37p from every time they show it.”

The Financial Times mentions "Humph in Wonderland"

In the <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/ea25e5ee-b1c2-11dc-9777-0000779fd2ac.html?nclick_check=1"" target="_blank">FT's radio column from December 24, 2007 they mention the "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" special "Humph in Wonderland", which will air on BBC Radio 4 on Christmas day.

Here's the excerpt:

RADIO - MARTIN HOYLE
Published: December 24 2007 02:00 |

Ahhs all round for Cinderella's Ponies , panto's inveterate Shetland scene-stealers (11.00am). *** Talking of which, although the BBC has abandoned its home-grown panto with serious broadcasters riotously relaxing, Humph in Wonderland (12.04pm) raises smiles. When the I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue lot avoid the traps of silliness, smut and Jeremy Hardy's knee-jerk politicising they are very funny, especially Sandi Toksvig's Queen of Hearts and Tim Brooke- Taylor's Duchess. And for that most famous smile in literature, who better as the Cheshire Cat than hatchet-faced Jack Dee?
Graeme in Jeremy Hardy repeat / Humph hosts Radio 4 show

What's surprising is how A-list many of them were - Jimmy Stewart (who stayed in the Air Force Reserve long after the war and even flew over Vietnam as an observer in a Superfortress), Clark Gable, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Henry Fonda. It's a bit like Tom Cruise volunteering to be a Top Gun for real."

SUNDAY TELEGRAPH

--------------------------------------------
Buster Keaton is considered one of the greatest comic actors of all time. His influence on physical comedy is rivaled only by Charlie Chaplin. Like many of the great actors of the silent era, Keaton's work was cast into near obscurity for many years. Only toward the end of his life was there a renewed interest in his films. An acrobatically skillful and psychologically insightful actor, Keaton made dozens of short films and fourteen major silent features, attesting to one of the most talented and innovative artists of his time.

--------------------------------------------
Bristol Silents was formed in August 2000 to promote and celebrate silent cinema and has gone from strength to strength with national tours of silent programmes and the hugely successful Slapstick Silent Comedy Festival establishing an international reputation for live silent film events.

'Bristol Silents has done a great thing for silent films. People as a whole have forgotten how wonderful they could be – how wonderful they still are.' PAUL MERTON

'Bristol Silents is an inspired idea. It is the first time anyone has linked their community to the lost art of silent films ...'
KEVIN BROWNLOW

£12(£10)

Group discounts available

Promoted by Bristol Silents
Supported by Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Arts & Business, Watershed
