I honestly hadn't really thought about the Punk episode one way or another, I'm sure I would have taken that for granted but it's some of the other, more general themes that would be a bit hard to place.  Like I alluded to in another thread, there's a more sober aspect in many of the early episodes (especially series one) until they firmly established the dynamic and forgot about the 'doing good' aspect of it.  The peak of this was series five but generally the humour varies quite noticeably and there's no strong traceable mood or thematic shift. This is until about series eight, in which it seems that the trio subjugate 'personality humour' for a more cerebral approach (for want of a better word that would have prevented me repeating myself).  It may have just been the episodes that they had found themselves with and not been in any way intentional which is interesting in its self.

Ironically, the shift to ITV brought back the type of humour that showcased their personalities but the writing was often erratic at best.  I think the shift from the BBC to ITV displayed an interesting contrast.

I think you roughly could, at least for those episodes satirising identifiable pop trends or issues (e.g. punk had to be 1977 or 78).

Ironically, one of the things that put me off series 6 (at the time) is TBT's haircut! ... and that for some reason I found series 6 tried just a little too hard to be clever, whereas series 4 and 5 seemed so effortlessly funny.

It's too easy.  Series five but it has roughly twice as much a chance of getting it right than all but one of the other series.  Do you pick the absolute best seven of average it out?

It's funny looking over all the episodes and noticing what sequence individual episodes belong.  If you didn't have prior knowledge and ignore things like aging and changing hairstyles as well as credits; I wonder if you could roughly pick where they sit.

I think that the episodes from six & seven are generally the hardest to pick because the trio were at their absolute peak at series five and the two subsequent years are stuck between the relativity more straightforward early years and the more cerebral final BBC series.

Series 4, 5 and 2 are my favourites.  Although I think the other series also have good individual episodes, series 4, 5 and 2 have an enjoyable unity about them.

Thank you for your nice welcome. ;0) just something i noticed on the first goodies dvd (in britain at least) they have a couple of hidden extras. I can't remember how but  I managed top find an old early 70's revolving BBC logo and voiceover introducing the goodies which then leads into the opening titles of the first or second series which fades out half way though...
