Went along to see Bill appearing in my home town of Sheffield at an event at the University last night (the launch of their 'Spring Into Nature' week). Event was well attended by both young and old. Bill was in fine flow, very passionate, continuing the theme of his recent blog post about tying to find the truth about environmental matters. Very critical of the current UK government (As well he might be, they are a right shower), in particular Minister for the Environment Owen Paterson (or as Bill thought he should be called, "Minister AGAINST the Environment". Also very vocal about the BBC! Best moment of the night was when he was about to break off for Q & As, and then realising he had more to say about Owen Paterson's misdeeds launched into another tirade, he prefixed it with, "You're probably all thinking, 'For goodness sake, show us a picture of a blue tit and be done with it'..."! Took the opportunity during the Q and A of saying how I'd heard during a recent interview (ie, 'The Goodies Podcast') how an engineer who worked on the show had sent him a CD with unedited sessions of all the (amazing) incidental music from the TV shows, and would he think of ever releasing it commercially, he was pretty dismissive and basically just said, yes, the engineer did send him the CD, there was about 10 hours (!) worth of music on it, he listened to it, he thought it sounded OK, but no, he wouldn't want to release it. I suppose it's his perogative, but I don't really understand his stance as in other interviews he's said how frustrating he found it to work hard on the songs only to have them end up buried under layers of audience laughter and sound effects. He did also say he thought he'd never been to Sheffield before but as he was driving around he realised he had appeared at the University before, in 1978, when off the back of the Goodies he did a musical tour - apparently his backing band were called 'Pacific Eardrum' and he said they were mainly Australian musicians, they came on and did a set and then he came on and did some songs with them. I would loved to have been in attendance at that show - alas 2 years before I was born... He also spoke briefly about his recent bouts of mental illness and claimed his doctor had said to him when he was diagnosed as bipolar, "It was obvious to me from when I used to watch you on The Goodies that you were bipolar..." |
