From The Daily Telegraph:
The Chasers switch channels to Seven just to tell a few fibs
Holly Byrnes The Daily Telegraph February 06, 201212:00AM
CALL it a ceasefire or an elaborate plan to bring down Channel 7 from within - a trio from The Chaser will begin filming a new comedy series this week for the network which once took them to court.
Craig Reucassel, Julian Morrow and Andrew Hansen have teamed up with The Goodies' Graeme Garden to bring his UK radio program The Unbelievable Truth to the small screen for Seven. The comedy panel show, which films the first episode of 10 in Sydney tomorrow, challenges comedians and actors to tell a fabricated story but bluff the panel by including one bizarre truth.
The panel, which will include Morrow, Hansen, Garden and invited guests, must buzz in when they believe they can pick fact from fiction.
Reucassel, who will play host, said the partnership with their comic hero was "a great one we couldn't refuse".
''Over the years we have knocked back commercial television many times and the reason we are doing this, is this is a show that we want to do and they were keen in."
Brad Lyons, Seven's head of production said: "it's a great idea and we were very excited when the guys brought it to Seven. Audiences know Craig, Andrew and Julian well, and we have a brilliant mix of established and up-and-coming comedians coming through on the show.''
Hansen began discussing the production's local potential with Garden and his Goodies co-star Tim Brooke-Taylor when he played a part in the pair's tour of Australia in 2009.
Working with Seven, after The Chaser's history clashing with Today Tonight and its hapless hosts, was a ceasefire of sorts.
"Either that or this is our newest way to bring down Seven, we haven't decided yet. We'll see how it goes. If it tanks, in hindsight we can go 'ha, we planned it all along,''' Reucassel joked.
"Kyle (Sandilands) says that with every show he does."
The BBC radio series has drawn both critical acclaim and public criticism for the taste level of some of the story-telling.
The UK host David Mitchell (of comedy duo Mitchell and Webb fame) was branded "insensitive" when he opened one episode with the line: "There is absolutely no truth to the rumour that the last line of Anne Frank's diary reads: 'Today is my birthday and my dad bought me a drum kit.'"
The Chaser's move on to commercial TV does not spell the end of their long-term relationship on the ABC, with this year to be their ''busiest yet'' with Aunty, Reucassel said.
Chas Licciardello and Chris Taylor are not involved in the Channel 7 series, with Licciardello to commentate for ABC24 on the upcoming US election.
Morrow and Reucassel were also producing a program "for the factual department, not comedy," which they will began filming for the ABC after The Unbelievable Truth.
A decision on a second series of Hamster Wheel was yet to be made.
''We never 100 per cent lock in. I'd like to do another Hamster Wheel but it won't definitely be another Hamster Wheel,'' Reucassel said.
